Almost there. One repeat left.

Sam even helped me pin it out.

Things That Need To Be Done

My sleep schedule is still horribly off. Also I am a massive procrastinator.

I have to have a paper and a discussion prepared for my Monday class every week, and every week I finish it between work ending at 1 pm, and class starting at 6. This past weekend I thought I would get a headstart and start my homework Sunday night, which kind of backfired since I was exhausted by 9 pm. I got a good chunk of it done, so that I only have a bit to finish after work today.

Unfortunately my body was not convinced, and I woke up about every two hours last night, convinced that Everything Is Going To Be Bad. One of those times I even thought, hey if its 5 am, maybe I’ll get up and work on it a bit and I can nap after work. Nope, it was 2 am.

I’m not entirely sure why I put off things that aren’t all that difficult. I have a similar problem with my knitting and quilting projects. I get really excited about something, and work on it every day for a week, then I get busy at work or have a paper due, and either abandon what I was doing or work at a snails pace from then on.

The Spanish Peacock shawl being the latest example of this. It feels like I work on it all the time, and it never looks any bigger. Boo.

I also have a small red bump on my shoulder, which I thought may have been acne, but since its been over a week, my brain just suggested MAYBE ITS MELANOMA. Great. What the hell is wrong with me.

Restless

Its 1:06 AM. And I can’t sleep. As in wide awake.

I fall asleep earlier than this, normally with the light on, and a book open in my hand. Only once in a while I can’t fall asleep.

The house is quiet, and even though the cats and husband are sound asleep, I still feel the need to tiptoe around the house.

When I can’t sleep, I want to organize everything. I want to clean, I want to throw junk out, and de-clutter. Unfortunately I can’t right now, and I probably won’t be motivated to do it in the morning. I get the need every so often to change things around. When I was a kid I would move the furniture around in my bedroom, and my parents would tease me about it. I still do the same thing to this day. I need a change to keep me sane.

The shawl I have been working on is frustrating me. Despite knitting thousands of stitches around and around and around, it never gets any fucking bigger (or so it seems). It will hopefully look something like this when its done, and I will wear it over a charcoal gray pea coat as I walk through the woods with lovely fall colors around me (this probably will only happen in my head.)

I just knit a few stitches while waiting for the photo to upload. The lighting is awful, and normally I would delete a picture so yellow, but I like it at the moment.

Maybe I’ll get a haircut in the morning, maybe it will be enough change for now.

Mr. Greenjeans

DSC_3405, originally uploaded by Ashley Lankenau.

I started this sweater about a month ago, and it has been a wonderful experience. This is my first time working with malabrigo. It is just as squishy and soft as everyone says, and the color is wonderful.

Russell bought me the yarn for my birthday. All I told him was that I needed 5 hanks for a sweater, and that he could pick out a color. It was a fun way to get the yarn I wanted and still be surprised at the same time. Its called velvet grapes and its beautiful.

Advent calendar- almost done

DSC_2963

I cut out the squares and sewed the pockets together for this advent calendar several weeks ago. But I didn’t assemble the quilt top all together until this week. I was able to finish the top, quilt, and bind all in one day. I love small quilts now! I really need to make more.

DSC_3184

I think this turned out really well. I bought some felt today to make little numbers for the pockets. I was going to sew them on before quilting, but I kind of forgot til it was all done. The pattern is from Sew Mama Sew, and I only made a couple of modifications. I made the sashing 1″ instead of 2″, and added rick rack to the edge under the bias tape binding. A few of my squares were a little off center, but after washing, it really wrinkled up nicely so that you can’t tell. This also made the pockets really pop out nicely. As soon as the numbers are sewn on, this mini quilt will be ready for Christmas, just a few months early.

I’m in love

With the quilt as you go method.

DSC_3165

This block is 12″ square, and uses leftover jelly roll pieces from my Neptune Quilt.

DSC_3168

This second block is made using fabric from a Halloween fat quarter bundle from my stash. I went with crazy log cabin on this one, and it was even easier than the first. I really think free form is for me, and it skips the step I hate the most, pressing.

DSC_3162

This is also the first time I’ve had to fussy cut, but it turned out alright. I like my little owl dude in the center.

DSC_3161

I used a variegated thread that changes between dark brown and pale tan. It looks like I changed thread colors a lot for the quilting, adding to the crazy free form look.

Thunder Bluff Mitten

DSC_3137

It is fairly difficult to take a photo of a mitten on your right hand with a camera set up for pushing a button on the right. I was able to get a few good shots out of the many I took though.

These mittens are inspired by the city Thunder Bluff in World of Warcraft. I used designs and colors from the totems and art found throughout the city.

DSC_3152

This isn’t the first time I have designed a colorwork chart based on a spur of the moment inspiration. I have lots of sketches and graph paper charts that never came to fruition, so it feels good to follow through and actually knit it.

I also discovered that the top of my sock blocker is perfect for blocking mittens, and it even has a point to stretch out the tip. Now its time to start on the second mitten, we’ll see how long that takes.

Cheater quilt

I’ve had this cheater quilt print in my stash for several years, and today, while it was pouring outside I decided to finally make something.
DSC_3036

I used a $10 king size sheet from walmart for backing, and its all ready to be quilted.

DSC_3016

I bought some twin size flat sheets, $3 each, also. The tan on the left will be for an all red quilt, I’m thinking flying geese, an the cream on the right I just got for who knows what. I used the orange and some green floral fabric from my stash to make some half square triangle blocks, and I have been playing with layouts.

I’ve decided on the zigzag, for a baby quilt. I hope someone likes these colors because I am not liking it myself. I like the green a lot, but the orange is way too bold for my tastes.

Mystery Block 1

I signed up for Fat Quarter Shop’s Christmas Mystery Block of the Month club, and my first shipment arrived Saturday.

First shipment- block one and sashing

Block one’s fabric is on the left, and the sashing is on the right.

Block one fabrics

Here’s a closeup of the fabric, I just love the Fa La La print. The colors are great, and the red, blue, and green scheme will match my current Christmas decorations and my new tree skirt. I washed all the fabric right away, dried it in the dryer for about 15 minutes, and then ironed it dry the rest of the way.

Block one - June

After about three hours of cutting and sewing, my first block was done. Thats right, on the same day it arrived. Oh well. Hopefully next month I will be able to contain myself, and work on it for a few days.

Quilt top and Pine and Ivy shawl finished

So this weekend I broke in my new(old) machine and finished the quilt top I was working on. It is now made into a quilt sandwich, and ready to be quilted.

IMG_1643

I bought this fabric bundle on etsy Friday, and it was shipped to my house already. This is a coordinating fabric set by Heather Ross. I fell in love with the mermaids and octopus prints, as well as the teal gold and orange color scheme. I haven’t decided what kind of quilt to make this into yet.

I also finished knitting the Pine and Ivy shawl I started back in March. Its blocking now, and I can’t wait to do a real photo shoot later this week during the day. The pattern is from Knitspot and I absolutely had to knit it as soon as she posted pictures. It was being test knit for a while before she released it and I was really excited to finally work on it. I knit pretty much nothing but this for the past month, and it was a fun knit.
