Priorities

This list is mostly for myself, I found that I have an alarming number of unfinished knitting projects.

WIP List:
Equisetum hat
Summer in Kansas shawl
Crochet Shrug
Socks for Russ
Tapestry

If I stick to this list, I should finish Tapestry just in time for fall. We will see how that goes, I knit the first few rows the other day and the wool made my hands hot.

Blocks and sashing done!

I ordered the border and backing fabric yesterday and it should be here by next week. I am so excited to have a new quilt for my bedroom.

Hmmmm

It appears as though 2 blocks have gone missing. When I matched all of the blocks up with their mates, I found none missing. So the only answer I can come up with is that I forgot to sew the last strip set together. Oops. Glad I have extra.

It looks like this outside.

And it was very cold and windy before it began to rain.

So I am doing a bit of crochet under the quilt and watching a movie. A good Friday I’d say.

30 minute quilt top

I found this tutorial on the Ravelry Quilting group. The concept is really interesting: sew all the strips together in a jelly roll end to end, fold in half and sew along the long edge, cut the end open. Repeat the folding, sewing, and cutting steps until you have a quilt top.

The samples show using full strips, but I thought it would be more visually interesting to use different length pieces. I had a good 1/3 of the jelly roll left from my neptune quilt that has been waiting to be made into something. I had three or four full 42″ strips, but the rest were all different sizes, and I think it made it way better looking.

After looking at it, I decided to play with it some more. I did two more folds, then two folds going the opposite direction. Love it.

Buttercup body done

Well it took forever, but the body is finally done. My knitting time has been severely limited as of late, so I decided to enjoy the time I had and worked on this while watching the entire series Twin Peaks.

The fit is great, and it should be. I did try it on about 50 times while working on it. Now onto the sleeves. Hopefully they wont take as long since they will be 3/4.

That is a lot of extra foot room right there

It wouldn’t be so bad, except I made two of them.

I sure know what I like

So I saw this coat on the Ruche website tonight, and I almost bought it immediately. Its green and girly and I love it. Then remembered that I have an unfinished sewing project of over 3 years that is basically the same thing. Its a green corduroy jacket without the ruffles, with the same collar, and cool trim on the sleeves.

I dug it out of the closet, and it turns out all I had left was hand stitching the lining on one sleeve and the hem, and sewing the buttons on. Everything else is basically finished. I did a pretty good job with the sewing itself. I seemed to always abandon a project when I had a lot of hand sewing to do. But now that I have hand stitched the binding on a few quilts now, the task is far less daunting. I was able to knock out the other sleeve lining and part of the hem tonight, and I’ll finish it in the morning when I can find some buttons.

Math problems

So I’m happily knitting along on my shawl, about half way through the border when I realize I definitely won’t have enough yarn. Oops.
I weighed the skein before the border.
22 grams
There are 48 repeats of the pattern, when I had done 17, I only had 9 grams left. Double oops.
I’m debating on whether to scrap the whole project and rewind the yarn or to knit the border in another yarn.

Triangular Frost Flowers and Leaves Shawl

I have wanted to make the Frost Flowers and Leaves shawl from A Gathering of Lace since I saw Eunny Jang’s version a few years back.* I have even attempted to knit it a few times, but always got discouraged by the size of it, and by the complexity of the first chart. And I wasn’t a big fan of the square shape, I much prefer triangular or rectangular shawls.

I even bought this Briar Rose Angel Face (2500 yds!) specifically for this project, but the color made it hard to see what I was doing in the lace, and I kept having to rip back for having the wrong number of stitches.

So I had a great idea a few weeks back: make the shawl triangular by only doing two repeats instead of four. I had to fiddle with the chart a bit, not a ton, and I decided to include the final edging as the side edging. Here’s what I came up with:

I’m feeling quite clever, and I can’t stop admiring the swatch. I want to start on this right away, but I have a couple other things to finish up first. Also I need to find just the right yarn for it.

My current favorite Dream In Color Baby in gold experience.

But I’m also thinking of getting Madeline Tosh Lace in either Filigree or Turquoise.

*Side note: I really miss her blog updates. I’m happy for her for getting a job at Interweave Knits, but yeah… she always knit the most beautiful stuff.
