Advent calendar- almost done

DSC_2963

I cut out the squares and sewed the pockets together for this advent calendar several weeks ago. But I didn’t assemble the quilt top all together until this week. I was able to finish the top, quilt, and bind all in one day. I love small quilts now! I really need to make more.

I think this turned out really well. I bought some felt today to make little numbers for the pockets. I was going to sew them on before quilting, but I kind of forgot til it was all done. The pattern is from Sew Mama Sew, and I only made a couple of modifications. I made the sashing 1″ instead of 2″, and added rick rack to the edge under the bias tape binding. A few of my squares were a little off center, but after washing, it really wrinkled up nicely so that you can’t tell. This also made the pockets really pop out nicely. As soon as the numbers are sewn on, this mini quilt will be ready for Christmas, just a few months early.

Just a normal day

My desk is a mess with quilting fabric and supplies, I’m playing World of Warcraft, and Sam is slowly pushing my keyboard off the desk in her sleep.

One day dress

DSC_3175

Sometimes I wake up and think, today I am going to get something done. And thats exactly what I did. I made this dress.

Pattern: New Look 6588 view B

Fabric: under 2 yards, on sale for 3.50 a yard

The only modifications I made were adding bias tape to the necline and armholes, and shortening the hem by around 7 inches. I though the length would be fine until I tried it on and it went mid calf instead of above knee.

I’ve been wearing alot of dresses lately because it has been humid and over 90 degrees here for a week! I’m not a fan of shorts since I haven’t ever found any that look good on my body. I wear jeans all through summer so its nice to wear something a bit cooler.

I’m in love

With the quilt as you go method.

This block is 12″ square, and uses leftover jelly roll pieces from my Neptune Quilt.

This second block is made using fabric from a Halloween fat quarter bundle from my stash. I went with crazy log cabin on this one, and it was even easier than the first. I really think free form is for me, and it skips the step I hate the most, pressing.

This is also the first time I’ve had to fussy cut, but it turned out alright. I like my little owl dude in the center.

I used a variegated thread that changes between dark brown and pale tan. It looks like I changed thread colors a lot for the quilting, adding to the crazy free form look.

Music Monday

サカナクション/アルクアラウンド

Band: Sakanaction

Song: Aruku Araundo (walk around)

This is one of my favorite Japanese bands, and this is definitely one of their best songs, and most interesting videos. I really like the different methods they used to show the lyrics of the song, and the fact that it was one continuous shot. The stands each have part of a Japanese character on them, so that you can’t actually read a line or phrase until the angle is perfect. Really fun song and interesting video.

Thunder Bluff Mitten

DSC_3137

It is fairly difficult to take a photo of a mitten on your right hand with a camera set up for pushing a button on the right. I was able to get a few good shots out of the many I took though.

These mittens are inspired by the city Thunder Bluff in World of Warcraft. I used designs and colors from the totems and art found throughout the city.

This isn’t the first time I have designed a colorwork chart based on a spur of the moment inspiration. I have lots of sketches and graph paper charts that never came to fruition, so it feels good to follow through and actually knit it.

I also discovered that the top of my sock blocker is perfect for blocking mittens, and it even has a point to stretch out the tip. Now its time to start on the second mitten, we’ll see how long that takes.
