Cheater quilt

I’ve had this cheater quilt print in my stash for several years, and today, while it was pouring outside I decided to finally make something.

I used a $10 king size sheet from walmart for backing, and its all ready to be quilted.

I bought some twin size flat sheets, $3 each, also. The tan on the left will be for an all red quilt, I’m thinking flying geese, an the cream on the right I just got for who knows what. I used the orange and some green floral fabric from my stash to make some half square triangle blocks, and I have been playing with layouts.

I’ve decided on the zigzag, for a baby quilt. I hope someone likes these colors because I am not liking it myself. I like the green a lot, but the orange is way too bold for my tastes.

Mystery Block 1

I signed up for Fat Quarter Shop’s Christmas Mystery Block of the Month club, and my first shipment arrived Saturday.

First shipment- block one and sashing

Block one’s fabric is on the left, and the sashing is on the right.

Here’s a closeup of the fabric, I just love the Fa La La print. The colors are great, and the red, blue, and green scheme will match my current Christmas decorations and my new tree skirt. I washed all the fabric right away, dried it in the dryer for about 15 minutes, and then ironed it dry the rest of the way.

Block one - June

After about three hours of cutting and sewing, my first block was done. Thats right, on the same day it arrived. Oh well. Hopefully next month I will be able to contain myself, and work on it for a few days.

Christmas Tree Skirt

I’m enjoying my time off from school to work on some christmas projects. I started this tree skirt, and its been really quick and easy. The skirt is made in 8 wedges, which are pieced and trimmed to the right size and shape.

Neptune Quilt Finished

Here’s a picture of the quilt sandwich ready to be pinned. For the last two quilts I’ve used a combination of spray basting and safety pins, and it works really well to keep the layers together, and the spray basting really prevents any bunching or folding which will screw up the quilting later.

For the quilting, I just did diagonal lines across the squares in a green thread I found in my supply box. I was worried that this wouldn’t be enough quilting to keep everything secure, but I didn’t have to repair anything after it came out of the dryer.

I finished all the quilting Friday, and the binding Friday night and all day Saturday, but it was too rainy to take any photos until recently.

The back turned out really well, and I’m glad I used the leftover jelly roll pieces for the stripe.

This quilt now lives on the back of the couch, and has been used alot for watching tv and movies. The only real problem is that it isn’t big enough for both of us to use, so now I’ll have to finish the quilt I started for Russ.

Neptune Quilt

When I first saw the Neptune fabric collection by Tula Pink, I knew I had to have it. Unfortunately for me, it has been discontinued. I did alot of searching online, and it was really hard to track down any kind of set, and I even ordered a jelly roll and some backing fabric from a site, only to find out they didn’t carry any of it anymore. They sent me an email saying they were cancelling my order, because they were out of the jelly roll, and when I went back to the site all of that collection had been taken down. Boo. I ended up finding both a jelly roll and a charm pack from Everything quilts, so I ordered one of each. I dont have any in progress pictures of the blocks, because I started working on it right away, and have been in the zone.

The blocks are either one charm square with a white border, or a white square with a jelly roll border. They turned out really well, except for this one and its mate:

I accidentally swapped two pieces in the aqua and green blocks. I didn’t find it til I laid out the whole thing, so I’m keeping it this way.

The backing fabric I found at hobby lobby, and I used a 40% off coupon, so it ended up being super cheap. The lady at the cutting counter told me “don’t you think this backing is kind of bright with the other fabrics” to which I responded “no”. I don’t know what else you could say besides that. I finished piecing all the blocks together, the backing, and cutting and sewing the binding yesterday, and today I am up bright and early to try and finish this thing. Yay.
