I am in love with this shawl. I bought the pattern about a year ago, and couldn’t figure out what yarn to use with it. I have a wedding to go to in June, and I’d love to wear this. I picture it going with a grey or silver dress, which I do not own yet. I can’t really think of what else to wear with a powder blue grey shawl.
Pattern: Girl’s Best Friend
Yarn: MistiĀ Alpaca Lace in Sea Mist
Started: January 3rd
Finished: February 7th
Modifications: There was a lace panel down the center, which I replaced with a column of knits, and the panel on the sides I replaced with garter. I also used size 6 needles instead of 8, because I liked the look better. Somehow I managed to use half the amount of yarn the pattern called for. I knew I would use less with the smaller needles, but I was surprised at its size for only 1 50 gram ball. The last modification I made was to only bead every other wrong side row on the edging. This was done so I wouldn’t run out of beads or go insane.
This is my first beaded knitting project, and I have to say, I love the look, but it will be a long time before I do it again. I used the crochet hook method, instead of stringing 500 beads onto the yarn. It is a bit tedious, but since the beads sit on both legs of a stitch, it really looks way better than the beads strung onto the yarn.
I started this just for fun after Christmas, but I really pushed myself to finish it quickly once I joined the 10 shawls in 2010 Ravelry group. It turns out if I work on just one thing, just a few rows each day, I can finish a lace shawl in about a month.
I have reconsidered my Knitting Olympics goal for this year. Since this shawl took about a month with only 50g of yarn, I’m fairly certain that I can’t finish a shawl with 100g of yarn in time. I’ll have to decide what to do, since it starts Friday.
